Kelvin is a 17-year-old beneficiary from Budumburam. He suffered a spinal cord injury from birth, and this has impaired his mobility ever since. Kelvin has had to rely on the aid of a wheelchair to go about his daily activities. In recent times however, his wheelchair has been in poor condition and with little to no funds to purchase a new one, this meant Kelvin had to rely on the support of his single mother to move around. This was burdensome, hence his mother reached out to GraceStation foundation to assist with getting her son a new wheelchair.
As standard practice the foundation’s Health officer assessed the request by meeting with Kelvin and his family, reviewing their circumstances and the faulty and worn wheelchair as well as exploring the various mobility options available to Kelvin upon deciding to intervene.
Consequently, Kelvin was provided with a wheelchair suitable for his weight, frame and posture. He and his family were also trained in the safe usage and maintenance of the wheelchair. As a result, Kelvin has regained his mobility, independence, and self-esteem. He expressed satisfaction with his chair and the service received from the foundation, and he has now resumed his studies at Senior High School. His mother also expressed gratitude as she no longer has to fully assist him in performing basic activities.
