GraceStation foundation offers a multi-faceted approach to alleviate the challenges faced by vulnerable households and institutions. One of such remarkable initiatives include a food security training program.

This year’s food security training was conducted in May 2023, for 8 orphanages in four regions (Volta, Eastern, Central, and Oti region). For the orphanages participating in this program, the food security training was a watershed moment. While GraceStation Foundation has been steadfast in providing essential food items such as rice, oil, tomatoes, spaghetti, maize, and mackerel, the training represented a pivotal shift towards self-reliance.

The training covered a spectrum of critical topics, including climate-smart agriculture, faster propagation methods, and the preparation of nutrient-rich compost. These were not just theoretical concepts; they were practical tools that the orphanages could immediately put into action. All 8 orphanages were supported with seeds and fertilizers after the trainings.

The adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices enabled them to adapt to changing weather patterns, ensuring a steady supply of food regardless of climatic challenges. Faster propagation methods increased crop yields, creating surplus produce for the orphanages to share with their beneficiaries.

Mr. Emmanuel, Director of Volta Home Orphanage shared his experience: "The food security training was a game-changer for us. It empowered us with the knowledge and resources to grow our own food. Now, we can produce some foodstuff to augment the ones GraceStation has been providing for us.

Through diligent monitoring and evaluation, GraceStation Foundation witnessed firsthand the transformation that had taken place. The orphanages have implemented these relevant skills at different stages.

Madam Edith, the caretaker of Akwadum Christian Village in the Eastern region which houses about 40 people shared her experience- “The orphanage has a small plot of land behind its building, which was previously unused. After attending the food security training program, the children and I decided to turn the land into a vegetable garden and now we have planted okra, cabbage, and garden egg. We also learned how to make compost from kitchen waste and how to water plants efficiently. These vegetables have been a great source of nutrients for us as we can hardly afford them. We want to thank GraceStation Foundation for this great initiative.”

In a world marked by uncertainty and challenges, GraceStation Foundation's food security training was a reminder that true empowerment lies in equipping individuals and communities with the tools they need to stand on their own two feet. It showcased the power of knowledge, self-reliance, and unity.

“This training was great, and the facilitator was very practical. The seeds and the fertilizers gave us an outstanding headway on implementing all the skills we have received. We have been able to grow the seeds that were given to us, and we appreciate this initiative amongst the regular food items the foundation gives to support us. The children also enjoy working in the garden, as it gives them a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. We are very thankful to GraceStation Foundation for the food security training program. -Mr. Osei, Caretaker of Country-Side Orphanage (Central region).

As the 8 orphanages continue to cultivate hope and sustenance from the seeds planted during the food security training, GraceStation Foundation's impact grows stronger with each passing season. The food security training program from GraceStation foundation is an example of how the foundation empowers its beneficiaries to improve their food security and well-being.
